Frugals today?

Shopped the store I work for first for milk, nothing else on my list was available there but I am supporting the company that is paying my salary first.

Went to Meijers and found Easter candy and accessories 70% off.  I bought Peeps brand nail polish with nail file, polish, 2 thingy's that your put your fingers in to paint your nails and flower stickers to put on your fingers.. 89 cents.  Peels Lip Balms in flavors strawberry, grape, vanilla marshmallow, and cotton candy marshmallow $1.50.  These will be taken out of their pkg. and repackaged in a gift basket for my 11 year old niece for Christmas.

My dog's dog food was on sale there for $10.99 a bag, bought 2 bags.  The cheapest I've found it is $11.99.  I may go back and get a rain check on those as I took the last two bags.

And of course picked up some candy for dh and I not a lot but a cpl. choc. bunnies.

I also went to the thrift store and found 4 shirts and a lunch bag for $8.00.  The shirts are for work.

Frugal so far today?

Have most of the laundry done for the week, line dried 2 loads yesterday while the sun was shining.  It's going to rain all this week so that was my last chance.

Today is the first day of my new job.. only 4 hours.  We will fill out paperwork, get our hair cut for drug testing, and watch several videos on the history of the company, hazmat and sexual harassment.  Oh and get a tour of the building.  So frugal is having money coming in again that will go towards paying down debt and saving for a new car.  Working part time I will probably make just enough money for the payment on a new vehicle, sigh!  We are doing research on what is going to be the most dependable in bad weather, gas milage usage, warranties and reviews.  We'd. love to have a Honda but Wow! they are expensive.  We want a SUV.

More frugals is making the dogs more chicken.. it's cooking on the stove top now.

Frugal Truck Repairs April 27, 2014

Our friend fixed our truck today.  The blower stopped working, I forget what the part was but dh sent me the other day to Napa to get it and our friend took out the old part today (showed it to us, it has gotten rust in the prongs), he replaced it with the new part.  We paid him $25 well worth it to us.  Feeling blessed to have such a good friend who has helped us so many times over the past year with repairs that would have cost us a small fortune.

Frugal today:

Making a large batch of chili.

Hanging clothes outside to line dry.. going to rain all this week so today is the last chance.

Saturday April 26, 2014

It's turning out to be a beautiful here in central Ohio.  We had rain earlier so can't mow as I had planned to do.

Today's frugal will be going to Aldi's for groceries.  I had planned that yesterday but had a afternoon job interview that threw my plans off a little.  I got the job!!  Yay!  I will be working for a bulk food supplier as a food demo person, 2 days a week.  I will also get some training as a cashier to work a 3rd day a week not sure what those hours will be yet.  Frugal will be not only making some extra money which will be used to pay down debt and save for a "new to us" car but I also will have 401k, Profit Sharing, Vacation Days and a employee discount.  I will also be in a position to buy discounted vegetables when they are about to expire.. think Dehydrating for winter use.

I am so excited, this is a huge huge corporation and they treat their employees very well.  Due to personal security issues I won't be publishing on here who the company is.

Clothes Repurposed

I have some grungy old white tshirts that belong to my husband.. some generic ones I bought that shrunk in the length.  First thought:  Throw them away.

RePurpose:

Cut up in to smaller pieces and put in the emergency supply box to make bandage covers if I need, can also be cut into long stripes for emergency tie off's.  You never know what emergency situation may pop up at a moments notice so I have some emergency stash in my First Aid box.

Friday April 25, 2014

Frugals today:

Paid my bills on time so no late fee's.  Organized the next 2 weeks of bills so I know how much I have left after bills and keeping on top of when they are due.

We had a weeks worth of tomato paste left in the cabinet.. we go through 10 cans a week as I make dh's tomato juice myself, cost less doing it that way and I control the sodium.  Tomato juice in the stores even the supposedly low sodium is packed with sodium higher than our intake allows so I have made it myself for years thanks to the recipe from Hillbilly Housewife's site.  So anyways.. I had a post office box that I had meant to use to ship something.  I put 10 cans in the box, labeled it for Winter Use and have it in my pantry.  I will continue to stock up on those so that this winter it's something I don't have to worry about buying and lugging in the house through 6 feet of snow and even saving myself a trip to the store when it's bad weather.

I am making a inventory of canned items we use a lot of and will buy extra's throughout the warmer months and will make less trips to the store this winter.

I am applying for retail jobs right now and most have a employee discount I will utilize that for grocery item stock up.

I had a friend once years back who really liked good expensive jewelry.  She took a job working the jewelry counter at what was then Lazarus (now Macy's).  She got paid to work there part time and got a employee discount so she was able to buy some nicer things that she normally couldn't afford to buy and got paid to do it.  Smart thinking.  Her husband was home in the evenings and weekends so he took care of the children while she worked so no child care cost.

Frugal Wednesday April 24, 2014

So far today:

I have made labels for my canning jars to hold my new order of incense sticks for my yard sale(s).

I have boiled 4 lbs. of cut up carrots that I bought on sale week before last 2 lbs. were 59 cents I think at Aldi's?  I am letting them cool now, will be putting in freezer containers and freezing for vegetable soups this winter.  Next time they are on sale I'll shred them and freeze to add to meatloaf mixes.

I have chopped up 6 red and yellow bell peppers that I bought at Aldi's this week.. I believe they were $1.29 for pkg. of 2.  I'll use these in stir fries.

I've hung up a load of jeans and sweat pants on the clothesline outside.  I'll be doing a load of towels shortly and hanging them outside to dry as well.

Energy Savings

Today I will be hanging clothes outside to dry instead of using the electric dryer in the house.

Our truck blower stopped working on dh's way home from work yesterday, frugal is dh went online to youtube, saw that there is a extra fuse box that he didn't know was on the truck.  It showed how to fix it but with his physical challenges he isn't able to get to it very easily so we will be asking our friend to fix it for us over the next day or two.  Our friend is a long distance truck driver and on the road right now.  So this will save us from paying a auto repair shop to fix it.  Dh also went online and shopped around for the best price on the fuse.. got it half the cost of the other big chains at Napa, ordered it online and I will pick it up first thing this morning when they open.  I also have errands to run today so will combine in a direct route so as not to waste gas, time and energy.

I ordered my incense sticks yesterday that I sell in my yard sales.. found out my supplier is going to stop carrying them so I started doing some research.  I was only able to find suppliers from India and El Cheapo looking packaging.  I contacted my Soaping Group for help and one of our members was able to direct me to a American supplier who actually is cheaper than the one I have now, which was pretty darn hard to beat. I can make my own but it's expensive to buy all the supplies I need to get started and it's messy work.

All meals from home today.

Fruits and Veggies Eat More

Here is another Facebook page that I really like, beautiful ideas for serving veggies and fruits.  I can't wait to go to Aldi's this week for their red and yellow bell peppers.  I want to make them with steamed perch.. Yum!  And they are on sale this week which is the only time I buy bell peppers, gotta be on sale otherwise the price is just too high for our frugal living.  Hope you will all enjoy.

Oh I like their tip about smiling when eating fruits and veggies in front of the kids that it makes them want to enjoy fruits and veggies too.

April 20, 2014 Happy Easter

Frugal today:

Staying home with my husband, no gasoline used, no money spent.

Dinner was slices of ham with brown sugar and pineapple slices baked in the oven.  Also homemade from scratch AuGratin Potatoes, using my dehydrated tomatoes from a cpl. weeks back.

Dessert:  Leftover white cake with fresh strawberries that I had frozen, heated in the microwave and drizzled over the cake.

Have clothes hanging on the clothesline, temp is 75 degree's here today.  Just a beautiful day.

Happy Easter To All.

Frugal so far today?

All meals from home, lunch was leftover pizza from yesterday.

Took the rest of my pop cans to the recyclers got $6 back.  Not the greatest haul but money that would otherwise go in the city's pocket if I put it in the recycle bin here at home.  I can use it more than they can.

Short trip to Aldi's since they will be closed tomorrow.. picked up a few things including a chicken for the girls meals this coming week.

Still watching streaming Breaking Bad series from Netflix and have two DVD's from Netflix to watch this weekend.

I should be home the rest of the weekend other than going for gas for the truck tomorrow.. 20 cents off a gallon using my Kroger card, blah!  Next months is 60 cents off a gallon but that is 12 days away yet.

Frugal Friday April 18, 2014

Pay bills on time, no late fee's.

Return DVD's to the library, renew the ones I haven't watched yet, pick up a new one that I had on order. Been watching a lot of old 1959 Lassie movies, Jack Benny shows and Burns and Allen.. love those old classics so cool looking at the old housewares in the shows and how different things were back then.  All the ladies wore dresses and high heel shoes in the house and running through the woods looking for Lassie LOL! Glad those days are over when you were expected to wear dresses all the time and husband and wifes in these movies slept in separate beds.

Watch the grocery shopping closely stick to the list (fingers crossed on that one).

Frugal Blessings April 17, 2014

Thanks to the kindness of a tree company representing AEP I will be getting my maple tree cut down for free this spring.

I was out in the yard this morning getting ready to mow and the guy stepped up to the fence warily (Cocoa was in the yard with me, my rott LOL) and said they wanted to trim the tree this spring.  I told him laughingly "I wouldn't mind if you cut the whole thing down".  He said he'd. see if they could.  We talked about the nice weather, about how I had went back to work during the terrible cold winter we had, he ask where and I told him about Cat Welfare dba The Catique and how we had been gifted with the retail space.  He came back a few minutes later after making a phone call and said "We're cutting the whole tree down for you".  He said "People helping people right?".  So a blessing from God.. we simply did not have the $700 that was quoted to us to have this tree cut down right now.  It has grown very big over the years we've lived here, it shadows over our yard so much that we have not been able to grow much in the way of our gardening because of the shade from it.  So I am feeling very very blessed today.

April 16, 2014

I went to Giant Eagle this morning to get some pectin, tomorrow I'll be making Candy Apple Jelly and needed more pectin.  I also needed a couple staple items like milk.  I had finally got motivated this morning to make a cake before I left the house.  Sure glad I did as I passed all those tempting sweets throughout the store.. just kept reminding myself.. "You have cake waiting at home with your choice of Cream Cheese Frosting or Chocolate Frosting".  So frugal was passing up all those little extra impulse buys like easter candy, doughnuts and of course the dreaded candy bars at the checkout counter.

Wednesday April 16, 2014 Grocery Organization Tip

For the past few years I've been using cloth bags for my grocery shopping.  Nice idea for recycling but they take up a lot of space and need washing frequently.  Going to the store with these made me feel like I was going to the laundry mat with all those cloth bags.  I worked with a volunteer this year who gave me a good idea.  At the resell shop, we would get donated huge garbage bags full of plastic grocery bags.  She volunteered to fold them when business was slow.  It made it so much neater to reach for them when we were busy to put customers purchased items in instead of a wadded up bunch of bags.  I bought Aldi's large plastic bags with handles 10 cents each.  I started folding them and put them in a gallon freezer bag.  I am able to fit about 8 or 9 of those bags in a freezer bag.  So now they are nice and tidy and don't take up a lot of space, fit very nicely in one of my kitchen drawers.  For me, this works out much better than all those cloth bags of assorted sizes and weights.

Oh and at the grocery stores I will let them continue to use their bags (except Aldi's) and I save them in one of those cloth bags with the circles in both ends.  I put the bags in there and then as I need them to pick up doogie poo or take out messy trash or things like chicken bones that I don't want to risk my dogs going in the trash and getting, another frugal solution. I also save some for the cars so when I go to the library and have a lot of books to bring home, I just take one of those in with me and carry my books out in a handy bag.
Hope this helps you to be better organized with your grocery shopping too.

Today's Frugals:

Stayed home most of the day till Cat Welfare Assoc. board meeting tonight from 7 to 9pm.  At our meeting tonight one of the topics was Estate Planning and we were encouraged to talk to our family and friends about what to do with your pets in the event of your death.  Tell them who will care for the pets, if you leave a bequest for a pet shelter such as ours with the request that they take your pet(s) make sure your family knows.  I've seen or heard of 2 incidents in the past cpl. years where the family pet was put to sleep because the family member didn't want them and didn't know arrangements had been made.   Very very sad!

Todays dinner cooked from home:  Tuna Casserole with mushrooms and peas mixed in.  One of our favorite meals and one that is a quick and easy for those nights when I'm on the go.  We did manage to squeeze in a streaming movie before I left for my meeting.

I crocheted on the afghan today.. this is one for us using up left over yarns.  Also watched another Lassie movie.. just love those shows and they always feature praying to God for help with Lassie, now days a movie like that would never be produced or would be banned if it was.  Sad times we are living in when God is shunned from schools, public places and movies.

Frugal Monday~April 14, 2014

Applied for a job online, saving gas and time of going out door to door.

All meals at home:  Dinner Rigatoni with Meatballs. Dessert Fresh Strawberries with Splenda.

Watched movies from Netflix streaming.

Cancelled Netflix DVD rentals for 6 months so reduced our bill about $10 or so a month, 6 months savings $60.  That extra money will be put into our savings account for emergencies.

Husband vacation day so no gas was used today for either vehicle and no money was spent.

Dogs are now eating a chicken a week instead of turkey burger over their dry dog food.  Whole chicken $5, which I cook, debone and save the chicken broth for when I make chicken and noodles or other meals that require a broth.  I keep it in the deep freezer.  Turkey burger $1.89 lb. X 7 days roughly $14 a week versus $5 a week for chicken instead.

Sunday April 13, 2014 Good Deals At Aldi's

Strawberries $1.29 lb.
Carrots 2 lb. 79 cents
Pineapples $1.29 each
Ham Shanks 99 cents a lb.

Today I'll be buying strawberries just to have on hand.  I'll also be buying 2 pkgs. of carrots, will steam blanch and freeze to use later in vegetable soups.  That is quite a bargain.  I may also buy a extra one just to have to snack on this week with ranch dressing.

Ham Shank will wait till I see the other store ads for this week before buying and will buy more than one to freeze for later meals.

Frugal Saturday April 12, 2014

Had my neighbor/friend fix my car.  It needed a Serpentine belt replaced on it.  He did it the same day that I ask and didn't want to take any money, in fact when I insisted he gave half of it back which I gave back to him and told him to buy his Mom some new lawn chairs so she and I can sit outside on the patio like we used to before a storm hit, knocked over her old table, bent the umbrella and shattered the glass on the table.

So for $50 I got my car fixed plus he checked the oil and said we were 4 quarts low OMG!!! I had bought 2 quarts today but will have to go back tomorrow and get two more.  The $50 it cost me that much for a diagnostic test for my truck a cpl. months ago at a auto repair place.  Not to fix it just to tell me what was wrong.

So I was able to help out a friend and still got good service at a reasonable price.

All meals from home today.. dh tried to tempt me into buying fast food but I stuck to my guns and served food we had on hand.

Frugal Friday April 11, 2014

Paid bills on time or ahead of time.

Got a free 12 pack of Nestea at Krogers using their Free Friday Digital coupon.

Bought only what I needed from the stores, no impulse buys.

Frozen Tombstone Pizza's, doctored up and served at home instead of buying pizza at a fast food restaurant, savings $25.00 off what we would normally pay since dh and I don't like the same type of pizza's and sometimes I don't want pizza at all so buy a sub or a sandwich instead.

Watched a free new series Breaking Bad on Netflix instead of renting movies out.  We will be going to streaming only on Netflix this weekend till fall as we don't watch movies very much during the spring/summer/fall months we're outside more often.  And I'm trying to get a part time job so I won't be home to watch movies much if I get a job.

I'm hoping to get a job to pay off some small debt we have in order to purchase a new vehicle next year.. so working towards the goal of paying off debt.

Wednesday April 9, 2014

Frugal so far today is getting set up to dehydrate potatoes. This is not one of my favorite things to dehydrate because of all the prepping involved but we were sure grateful this winter to have those potatoes on hand for AuGratin potatoes. We had used them as a supplement to the boxed AuGratin as there just is not enough potatoes in the box for us but while looking through the Ball book today I found a recipe for making my own that is not too complicated so I'll be coping that and putting it in my recipe book (small hard back photo book that I put recipes I've either cut out of books/mags/copied from the computer or wrote out on index cards).

I'll be watching some of my free DVD movies from the library while I am peeling and cutting the potatoes this morning. Can't get much more frugal than free.

I'll also be taking one of my dogs to Petco tonight to get her yearly Parvo/Distemper shot and Bordatella (sp?) shot.  $24 total and no office visit charge.

Tuesday April 8,2014

Today's frugal is making more strawberry preserves this morning and possibly some pears.  We had really high winds most of the night here and I'm a little tired this morning so may not get to the pears till later.

Todays dinner plans are baked chicken, corn and a carrot cake for dessert.

Forgot to mention I also packed up a bag of dog food into half gallon jars, used some Ball jars and recycled large pickle jars.  The girls have about a months worth of food "canned" up.  I try to keep stocked up for emergencies need more jars.  I would ideally like to have at least 6 months worth of food for them.  While we are blessed with my husband having a good job with a company that has been in business close to 50 years we do worry what will happen to the company when the owner passes away.  I believe he is in his late 80's and is still active in the company right now but his kids show no real interest in the company so the future is a little unclear so planning ahead is important.  My husband was in the hospital last year and off work for 6 weeks and it was really tough financially so I am trying very hard to save money and keep stocked up for these kinds of things.

Frugal Monday April 7th, 2014

Today I am baking a carrot cake that I bought the mix from Aldi's for $1.99.  It has carrots and raisins in it already which is convenient and cost effective since I didn't have 2 buy 2 extra ingredients to make it.  It's a good staple to keep in your long term storage, the exp. date is not till April 2015.  So in the winter months here in Ohio when there is 10 feet of snow on the ground (kidding but seems like it sometimes) and you want something sweet but don't want to go out or gather ingredients to make it's all in one box.. gotta like that.

I will also be going to Aldi's as soon as the oven preheats and I get the cake in.  Cake takes half hour to bake, I need to buy 4 items and Aldi's is less than a 3 minute drive from my house so it should all be good.

Dinner today will be:

Rigatoni with Turkey Meatballs
Salad
Cake

Monday April 7, 2014 Product Recommendations For Food Storage

As most of you who know me know.. I try very hard to Buy Made In The USA products whenever I can.

I was at Walmarts recently, they have 2 brands of canning jars.. I forget the one brands name but it makes it sound like All American cute square jars.  They were also cheaper than Ball brand.  I put two of them in my cart, went across the store for groceries and got to thinking.. wonder where they are made?  CHINA!  They were also a dollar or so cheaper than Ball brand but.. so back I went across the store and bought the Ball brand instead.  I know with Ball that my jars are going to last for years and years and I'm supporting American Workers.

I was recently ask for a recommendation on freezer containers.  This is the brand I would recommend most, they too have been around for a long time and are Made In The USA.

http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1445597

I do not recommend heating any plastic container in the microwave due to the plastic particles leaching into your food.  What I do is turn the container upside down, run some hot water on it enough to loosen it from it's sides and bottom, then put in a glass casserole dish (Corningware Made In The USA) and heat in the microwave.  Or let it sit out and thaw, put in a Pyrex (Made In The USA) measuring cup (large) and heat in the microwave.

I'm thinking this year for Christmas my adult family members are going to get themed Made In The USA products.

Sunday April 6,2014 Aldi's Deals This Week

Aldi's..

10 lb. bag of potatoes $1.99

Sugar 4 lb. bag $1.59

Flour  5 lb. bag $1.39

I will buy a bag of potatoes use some for mashed potatoes this week and dehydrate the rest for use this winter.  I have 2 food dehydrators that I use a lot when there are good sales like this.

Sugar I always need when canning season is in swing.

Flour.. another staple I use a lot of.

Buying in bulk is always a better plan but I don't always have the extra for bulk buying or the time to go to the places that sell it, this week being one of them.

Todays frugals:

Take DVD movies back to library before they are due, pick up 2 new ones I have on order.  Take library books back that I picked up the other day that my sister raved were so good... not my cup of tea so back they go.

Run a few errands all in the same direction so as not to use too much gas.. gas has went up higher this week than last weekend.

If the weather is decent tomorrow will be taking pop cans in to the recycle center.. I can only do this on Saturdays because I have so many that they won't fit in my car, have to use dh's truck.  The center is too far away to make more than one trip at a time and be worthwhile.

Thursday

Today is a stay at home day.. no gas used, no money spent.

Dinner will be Tuna Casserole.  Dessert will be a baked cake bought on sale after Christmas.  I think it's Christmas Confetti.  We don't care what color the cake is as long as it takes good.  Icing also after Christmas special got it for 25 cents.  So including the eggs, oil, etc. I'd estimate the total cost of the cake is around $1.50.

Tip:  Always look after a holiday for cake mixes and frostings that were made for the holidays.  A sweet treat doesn't have to be a standard color.  I've bought orange colored frosting after Halloween, Red after Christmas, Green after Christmas and then again after St. Patricks Day.  Smaller stores like Dollar General tend to have much cheaper after holiday prices.

Wednesday Frugal Dinner

Tombstone Pizza's bought on sale last week 3 for $8.00,  Made 2 for dinner tonight, dh likes his different than I do.  I think it averages out to $2.75 ish per pizza, I have leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

Wednesday Morning

7:00am Wednesday Morning

I have the water canner set up and waiting for the water to get hot so I can start making the strawberry preserves this morning. Got the food processor out and finely chopped the strawberries, for me it works so much faster than mashing with a potato masher but use what you have on hand. I should make about 14 to 15 jelly jars of preserves today. The strawberries from Aldis this week are from California and they are so huge!! And taste wonderful. I may end up buying more before the week is over.. they are as I mentioned earlier a little pricier than Krogers but now that I've tried them and I know how nice they are I doubt I'll stop at Krogers.

Today after I get the canning done, everything cleaned back up will be going to the library to pick up DVD's. I talked to my sister last night and she gave me the name of 2 authors she's been enjoying one I had been reading but took a break from the other J.D. Ward has two series I haven't read yet. So I'll be ordering those this spring/summer and saving my books that I own for winter reading when I can't get out in the snowy weather. Which is frugal and safer to stay home during the icy snowy weather.

WELCOME

I have been living frugally for many years and with our economy continuing to be a struggle for most of us I thought this would be a good place to share what I have learned and hopefully folks will come in and share what they have learned as well.

With Krogers starting a new trend in not doubling coupons here in Ohio and Indiana it is going to be even harder for all of us to try to save money at the grocery stores so with that in mind, lets all start trying to share our frugal tips with each other so that we can all "survive" the grocery jungle out there.

Anna
List Owner

Tuesdays Frugal Dinner

Morningstar Veggie Burgers.. bought at GFS (Gordon Food Service) 15 count pkg. about $16 I think so avg. a little over a dollar each.  I used 3 for tonight.. dh likes his dbl. burger and I like a single.  I want to mention that GFS their Morningstar Burgers are twice the size of the ones you buy at the grocery store, so a very good bargain for the money.  I am also serving crinkle cut french fries (Aldi's) $1.99 a pkg. I usually get about 3 different meals out of the fries so cost avg. I'm going to say a little less than 75 cents for a meal.  Provolone Cheese, ketchup and mustard for toppings on hamburger buns I got on clearance for 79 cents, will use 3 the rest will go in the freezer for another meal.

Dessert?  Ice cream with my homemade pineapple preserves, fresh strawberries and choc. syrup topping.

Meal for 2 adults:  Roughly $6 I would say.

Welcome Frugal Friends

Welcome To Frugal Living With Anna.

I have lead a frugal lifestyle most of my adult life but there is always something new to learn and share with others.  I hope you find my blog useful and feel free to contribute your own ideas with us here.

I do want to mention.. this blog was set up to share my frugal lifestyle and for others to join in on sharing theirs.

I welcome everyone regardless of race, sex gender or religion.  However.. I will delete anyone with a hidden agenda on here looking to push their "get rich quick schemes" or looking for a love mate.  I am serious about this.  I am disappointed here lately to see these kind of people trying to be on my blog.

I have been a moderator on a women's magazine since 2002 and one on homesteading so I'm not "new" to the internet so I can easily spot the scammers here you will be deleted instantly..
